After the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919, where hundreds of unarmed Indian civilians were killed by British forces under General Reginald Dyer, Nair resigned from the Viceroy’s Executive Council in protest. He later authored a bold critique titled Gandhi and Anarchy, which directly criticized British colonial rule and specifically targeted Michael O’Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.
In response, O’Dwyer filed a defamation suit against Nair in a British court in 1924. What followed was a high-stakes legal battle in the Court of King’s Bench in London. The case exposed the brutal realities of British imperialism to the world and became a pivotal moment in India’s journey to independence.
